IT System Engineer (f/m/d)
The Research and Information Management (RIME) team of the LRZ‘s Research Unit is seeking for an IT system engineer.
The RIME team is working in two focus areas of Research and Information Management. The team provides not only research support services to LRZ researchers, but also conducts own R&D projects, which very often are supported by third-party funders.
We are looking for a further team member to be engaged in various current and upcoming projects, in particular, in the BMFTR-funded “SOURCE: Skalierbare, offene und umfassende Erkennung von
Desinformationskampagnen im Web”, which follows the “OpenWebSearch.EU” Horizon Europe funded undertaking and runs for 3 years.
OpenWebSearch.EU aimed to provide an Open Web Index and LRZ contributed to the infrastructure framework and management. SOURCE is aiming at further elaborating of the project outcome focusing on the topic of disinformation.
Your Role and Responsibilities:
In this context, the member of the RIME team will focus on:
- deployment, test and operation of database management systems and data middleware (iRODS, MinIO, S3Proxy etc.);
- maintenance of experimental storage and computing infrastructure, including the set-up of virtual machines and container-based services on VMWare, OpenStack and Kubernetes;
- modules to connect our services to European data-management platforms, e.g. European Data Spaces and Data Labs; AI-Factories and Antennas;
- coordination with other, especially, EuroHPC JU Data and Computing centres on national and European level as well as participation in EuroHPC JU Working Groups;
- involvement in preparations of publications and reports of the project, and with shaping follow-up research ideas;
- support for the project leads and team colleagues in all project related activities, such as deliverables and milestones, reports, workshops and other events as well as dissemination and communication of results.
Basic Qualifications:
- master’s degree (with thesis) or PhD in computer science, engineering or any natural science; alternatively bachelor’s degree with thesis and 5 or more years of professional experience in IT
- system management and scripting:
- several years of experience with Linux and fluency on the Linux Command Line (bash),
- fluency in at least one further programming/scripting language (preferably Python),
- basic familiarity with virtualization frameworks (Kubernetes, Openstack, Docker etc.),
- familiarity with object storage (in particular S3) and NFS
- familiarity with database management systems and SQL;
- basic knowledge in design and implementation of RESTful web APIs;
- familiarity with source code management with Git / Gitlab / Github; basic knowledge of CI/CD;
- C1-level knowledge of English;
- B1-level knowledge or higher of German.
Preferred Qualifications:
- experience in administration of complex IT platforms;
- knowledge of web crawler system management;
- B2-level (or higher) knowledge of German;
- experience with simulation workflows in IT research, Big Data and AI, High-Performance Computing / Data Analytics (HPC/HPDA).

till 31.03.2029 (duration of the contract is connected to the project runtime), a further employment is intended.
