Schwerpunkt: Umfrageforschung und politische Partizipation

Die Promotionsstelle ist Teil des DFG-Emmy-Noether-Projekts „Die neue klimapolitische Spaltung“ (Projektleitung: Jun.-Prof. Dr. Endre Borbáth). Die Stelle ist zunächst auf zwei Jahre befristet. Eine Verlängerung um weitere zwei Jahre ist vorbehaltlich der erfolgreichen Evaluation des Gesamtprojekts möglich. Die Stelle ist an der Universität Heidelberg angesiedelt. Die Vergütung erfolgt bei Vorliegen der persönlichen und tariflichen Voraussetzungen nach Entgeltgruppe 13 TV-L im Umfang von 75 %.

Projektbeschreibung:

Das von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) im Emmy-Noether-Programm geförderte Forschungsprojekt untersucht die Dynamiken einer entstehenden Polarisierung zum Thema Klimawandel in der elektoralen und zivilgesellschaftlichen Arena. ClimateDivide verbindet Methoden der Computational Social Science, Survey-Experimente sowie qualitative Analysen von In- und Outgroup-Identitäten auf Basis von Fokusgruppen. Das Projekt umfasst sieben europäische Länder: Frankreich, Deutschland, Schweden, Italien, Spanien, Ungarn und Rumänien.

Die ausgeschriebene Stelle ist in Arbeitspaket 2: Individual Participation angesiedelt. WP2 untersucht Ausmaß, thematische Breite und Formen individueller politischer Partizipation entlang des entstehenden Klimakonflikts. Das Arbeitspaket stützt sich auf vorhandene Umfragedaten sowie auf eine eigene ländervergleichende Befragung mit eingebettetem Conjoint-Experiment und Panelkomponente. Die/der Doktorand*in trägt zur Konzeption, Durchführung, Auswertung und Publikation der Forschung in WP2 bei und verfasst eine Dissertation im Kontext des Arbeitspakets.

Ihre Aufgaben:

• Mitarbeit an der konzeptionellen Weiterentwicklung und Umsetzung von Arbeitspaket 2 zu individueller politischer Partizipation
• Aufbereitung und Analyse bestehender Umfragedatensätze zu klimabezogenen Einstellungen, Präferenzen und Partizipation
• Mitarbeit an Design, Programmierung, Feldorganisation und Dokumentation einer eigenen ländervergleichenden Befragung
• Mitarbeit an Design und Analyse eines Conjoint-Survey-Experiments zu Mobilisierungsappellen und Partizipationsbereitschaft
• Analyse von Individualdaten aus Umfragen und Experimenten mit quantitativen Methoden
• Mitarbeit an der Vorbereitung von Publikationen in begutachteten Fachzeitschriften
• Präsentation von Projektergebnissen auf internationalen Konferenzen und Workshops
• Verfassen einer Dissertation im Zusammenhang mit dem Forschungsprogramm von Arbeitspaket 2
• Aktive Beteiligung am wissenschaftlichen Austausch im ClimateDivide-Projektteam und am Institut für Politische Wissenschaft

Ihr Profil:

• Sehr guter Masterabschluss oder gleichwertiger Abschluss in Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Sozialwissenschaften oder einem verwandten Fach
• Ausgeprägtes Interesse an vergleichender Politikwissenschaft, politischer Partizipation, politischem Verhalten, sozialen Bewegungen, Klimapolitik oder politischer Polarisierung
• Gute Kenntnisse quantitativer Methoden der empirischen Sozialforschung
• Erfahrung mit Surveyforschung, Survey-Experimenten, Conjoint-Experimenten, Paneldaten oder kausaler Inferenz ist von Vorteil
• Gute Kenntnisse in R, Stata oder einer anderen statistischen Programmierumgebung; die Bereitschaft zur Arbeit mit R wird erwartet
• Sehr gute Englischkenntnisse in Wort und Schrift
• Deutschkenntnisse sind für die Stelle nicht erforderlich; die Bereitschaft, Deutschkenntnisse weiterzuentwickeln, ist willkommen
• Kenntnisse weiterer projektrelevanter Sprachen, insbesondere Französisch, Schwedisch, Spanisch, Italienisch, Ungarisch oder Rumänisch, sind von Vorteil
• Fähigkeit zu eigenständigem wissenschaftlichem Arbeiten und zur Zusammenarbeit in einem Forschungsteam
• Bereitschaft zur Arbeit vor Ort in Heidelberg ist erwünscht

The Institute of Political Science at Heidelberg University invites applications for a

Doctoral Researcher in Politics of Climate Change (f/m/d)
Focus: Survey Research and Political Participation

The doctoral researcher position is part of the DFG Emmy Noether project “The New Climate Divide” (Principal Investigator: Jun.-Prof. Dr. Endre Borbáth). The position is initially funded for two years, with the possibility of an extension for an additional two years, contingent upon the successful evaluation of the overall project. The position is based at Heidelberg University and remunerated according to TV-L E13 at 75%, provided that the personal and collectively agreed requirements are met.

Project Description:

The research project, funded by the Emmy Noether Programme of the German Research Foundation (DFG), investigates the dynamics of emerging polarization on climate change in the electoral and civil society arenas. ClimateDivide combines computational social science methods, survey experiments, and qualitative analysis of in- and out-group identity formation using focus groups. The project covers seven European countries: France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Hungary, and Romania.

The advertised position is located in Work Package 2: Individual Participation. WP2 examines the extent, issue focus, and form of individual-level participation on the emerging climate divide. It relies on existing survey data as well as an original cross-national survey with an embedded conjoint experiment and a panel component. The doctoral researcher will contribute to the design, implementation, analysis, and publication of the WP2 research agenda and will write a dissertation connected to the work package.

Your Tasks:

• Contribute to the conceptual development and implementation of Work Package 2 on individual participation
• Prepare and analyze existing survey datasets on climate-change-related attitudes, preferences, and participation
• Contribute to the design, programming, fielding, and documentation of an original cross-national survey
• Contribute to the design and analysis of a conjoint survey experiment on mobilizing appeals and willingness to participate
• Analyze individual-level survey and experimental data using quantitative methods
• Contribute to the preparation of publications in peer-reviewed journals
• Present project results at international conferences and workshops
• Write a doctoral dissertation related to the research agenda of Work Package 2
• Participate actively in the intellectual life of the ClimateDivide project team and the Institute of Political Science

Your Profile:

• A very good master’s degree, or equivalent, in political science, sociology, social sciences, or a related discipline
• Strong interest in comparative politics, political participation, political behavior, social movements, climate politics, or political polarization
• Good knowledge of quantitative methods in empirical social science research
• Experience with survey research, survey experiments, conjoint experiments, panel data, or causal inference is an advantage
• Good knowledge of R, Stata, or another statistical programming environment; willingness to work with R is expected
• Excellent English proficiency, written and oral
• Knowledge of German is not required for the position, but willingness to develop German-language skills is welcome
• Fluency in additional project-relevant languages, especially French, Swedish, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, or Romanian, is an advantage
• Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative research team
• Availability to work on-site in Heidelberg is preferred
